Source Folder
A folder on your computer containing files and folder that you want to have copied (synchronized) to another location.
Target Folder
The folder to which you want to back up the files and folders contained within the source folder.
Synchronization
The process of making sure that files (such as documents, pictures, and MP3s) in two locations are up to date with one another.
Scan Mode
Configurable method for comparing a source folder to a target folder and handling any differences between the two. There are currently four individual configurations that can be set within Save-N-Sync.
Standard Mode
Any new or updated files and folders on the source will be copied to the target. Any files that already exist on the target are updated only if they are older than those on the source. If a file or folder exists on the target but not the source, it is left alone.
Bi-Directional Mode *
Any new or updated files and folders on the source will be copied to the target. Any files that already exist on the target are updated if they are older than those on the source. If a newer file exists on the target, it will be brought back to the source. Likewise, if a file or folder exists on the target but not the source, it is copied back to the source.
Standard Mode with Deletions
Any new or updated files and folders on the source will be copied to the target. Any files that already exist on the target are updated if they are older than those on the source. If a file or folder exists on the target but not the source, it is deleted from the target.
Standard Mode with Exact Match (or Replication)
Any new or updated files and folders on the source will be copied to the target. Any files that already exist on the target are updated if they are older or newer than those on the source. If a file or folder exists on the target but not the source, it is deleted from the target. The end result is the target directory exactly matching the source directory.
Job
Stores configuration information for synchronizing a single source folder to a single target folder. Also contains a unique name for the source/target pair, as well as a configured scan mode.
Scheduling
The process of setting a task to run on its own on a specific pattern without user intervention.
Schedule
Stores configuration information for automating the Save-N-Sync synchronization process. Different schedule types include Run Now, Run Once, Interval, Daily Timer, and if applicable, Real-Time. Each individual schedule has several options, depending on the type. Each project can have several associated schedules. These schedules are applied to all jobs.
Project
Contains a list of jobs and schedules, as well as several other configuration options. A project can be created, configured, saved, opened, and ran all from the Save-N-Sync application. Only one project can be open at a time.
Real-Time Detection
A Windows-only capability that watches a source folder for any changes to its files and sub folders. If these changes are detected, they are automatically duplicated on the target folder. If a replication mode is enabled, deletions may be made on the target as well.
NOTE: Bi-Directional Mode does not work with this capability.
Connection Failure
The result of Save-N-Sync being unable to connect to an attached drive (ie: an external USB hard drive), a networked drive, or an online storage service. This usually occurs when either a plug to an external hard drive is disconnected, or an Internet connection is lost.
File Copy Failure
The result of Save-N-Sync being unable to read a source file or write to a target file. This usually occurs if another program is either reading from or writing to the file when Save-N-Sync tries to access it.
Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for Copying Open and Locked Files
A service built into the Windows operating system (XP and above) that allows Save-N-Sync to read and copy a source file that is currently open in another application (ie: copy an Outlook .pst file when Outlook has it open).
NOTE: This feature is not yet available to users of 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and is not available on Mac OS X and Linux platforms.
Filtering
The process of either including or excluding files and folders from synchronization if they meet certain criteria. In Save-N-Sync, filtering is performed based on file names ,extensions, and folder names only.
Reporting
The process of showing the user the progress of a project after it has been started. This also includes the logging of project activity in specific log files for later review.
Message
Generally, an error that Save-N-Sync encounters while it is running a project. Typically, these errors are generated with regards to failed connections or locked files.
Connection Type
A licensed module corresponding to a type of connection that Save-N-Sync is designed to support as either a source or target folder.
Basic
A connection that allows for use of folders on local and non-password-protected network shares.
Standard
A connection that allows for use of folders on local and both password-protected and non-password-protected network shares.
FTP (coming soon)
A connection that allows for use of folders on local and non-password-protected network shares, as well as on FTP servers.
Save-N-Sync Online Storage Service
A connection that allows for use of folders on local and non-password-protected network shares, as well as on the Save-N-Sync Online Storage Service.
License Package
The grouping of features available to a user based on what the user has chosen to purchase or evaluate. In Save-N-Sync, license packages are based on a connection type and are represented within .lic files.
Beta Version
A version of an application that is still undergoing testing and/or development. Beta versions are made available to the public in order to test functionality under user-specific environments. It is generally not available for sale and is eventually followed by a full release.
